What Order Should You Sit ACCA Exams In?
ACCA itself only mandates a handful of sequencing rules: everything else you'll read about "the right order" is recommendation, not requirement. This page separates the two clearly: what ACCA's exam progression rules actually require, and what's commonly recommended based on which papers build on which.
- Modules run in order: Applied Knowledge → Applied Skills → Strategic Professional
- You can sit across two modules, as long as you also enter for any outstanding exams in the earlier one
- Within a module, order is your choice: there's no ACCA rule dictating which paper first
- Some papers do underpin others: FA before FR, FR before AA, MA before PM
- EPSM before Strategic Professional is advice rather than a rule, but ACCA reports a 25% better success rate for students who complete it first
The official rules
These come directly from ACCA's exam progression rules page. Everything else on this page is guidance, not a rule ACCA enforces.
| Rule | What it means |
|---|---|
| Mandatory | Exams must be taken in modular order: Applied Knowledge → Applied Skills → Strategic Professional. Note what this does and doesn't mean: you can enter exams in the next module while papers in your current one are still outstanding, but if you do, you must enter for those outstanding exams at the same time. It stops you skipping a module, not sitting across two. |
| Mandatory | Within a module, you can attempt the papers in any order. |
| Recommended | Complete the Ethics and Professional Skills Module (EPSM) before sitting Strategic Professional exams. It isn't a prerequisite, and it can be taken any time after your Applied Knowledge exams, but ACCA reports that students who finish it beforehand have a 25% better success rate at Strategic Professional. EPSM must also be completed before the Oxford Brookes BSc can be awarded, if you're pursuing that. |
| Recommended | Sit SBL early in Strategic Professional, or alongside your first Options paper. Several tuition providers advise treating this as a hard rule; we can't find it stated on ACCA's own progression rules page, so it's listed here as strong advice rather than a requirement. Check directly with ACCA before planning around it either way. |
Applied Knowledge: any order works
BT, MA and FA can be sat in any order and are all available on demand with no fixed sitting dates, so there's no scheduling constraint either. A common approach is BT first, since it's the broadest and most conceptual of the three, then MA and FA in either order, but this is a starting-point suggestion, not a rule, and plenty of students do it differently with no disadvantage.
Applied Skills: where genuine prerequisites exist
This is the level where sequencing actually matters, because some papers' study guides explicitly assume knowledge from an earlier paper. LW and TX have no such dependency and can be slotted in anywhere. The two genuine chains worth respecting:
| Sit this first | Because it underpins |
|---|---|
| FA | FR (financial statements knowledge is foundational to FR, and FR is foundational to AA: audit requires the ability to interpret financial statements) |
| MA | PM (performance management builds directly on management accounting fundamentals) |
Providers differ on the full sequence, so treat any single "correct order" you see with suspicion. One reasonable route respecting both chains above is LW → MA → FA → PM → FR → TX → AA → FM, sitting LW early since it has no dependencies. Others put FM before FR, or leave TX to last. What's actually agreed is the two prerequisite chains, not one canonical ordering, so adapt around your own strengths, exemptions and sitting windows.
Strategic Professional: Essentials and Options
SBL and SBR are the two Essentials papers (both compulsory). SBR builds directly on FR, so many students sit it while FR is still fresh. SBL integrates knowledge across multiple Applied Skills papers, which is the reasoning behind the common advice to sit it early at this level rather than leaving it to the end. Beyond the Essentials, you choose two Options from four, and each has a direct Applied Skills counterpart it builds on:
| Option paper | Builds on |
|---|---|
| AFM: Advanced Financial Management | FM |
| APM: Advanced Performance Management | PM |
| ATX: Advanced Taxation | TX |
| AAA: Advanced Audit and Assurance | AA and SBR (commonly recommended after or alongside SBR specifically) |
Planning your route
Prior qualifications can shorten this considerably: up to 9 papers can be exempted depending on your background. Check what you might be able to skip → For sitting windows and deadlines once you've settled on an order, see the current exam dates →

Mandatory rules are quoted from ACCA's own "Exam progression rules" page (accaglobal.com/student), and the EPSM success-rate figure is ACCA's own, published on its Strategic Business Leader exam support page. ACCA does not publish a single official recommended order within a module. The within-module sequencing above reflects the prerequisite relationships described in ACCA's own study guides (each paper's syllabus lists assumed knowledge from earlier papers); the wider sequence is one reasonable route, not a consensus, and tuition providers disagree on it. The SBL timing advice is widely stated as a firm rule by third-party providers but we could not verify it on ACCA's own progression rules page, so it is listed as advice. Confirm anything you plan around directly with ACCA. GoQualified is not affiliated with ACCA.
